Does anyone have the modem working on the iBook 2.2 ?

I actually needed this during the last two weeks, so i downloaded the driver from Linuxant. Each time the driver is trying to initialize however, this just freezes my laptop and i have to do a hard reboot. So i was stuck with OSX for web access which was definitely not ideal.

Anyone has better experiences with that driver or any ideas why it freezes my laptop ?

I use a kernel from gentoo-dev-sources: 2.6.10-r6.

PS The emerge from the modem driver is *very* annoying. It adds itself as a service which is started as default. I really think it should *not* do that: i (and i guess most people) don't want the driver to be loaded if i won't use the modem (which is most of the time). Guess what happens if initialising the driver freezes your machine. Yeah, you reboot and it tries to initialise the driver again and... freezes.

I have an iBook 2 G3 500MHz (I'm not sure if we are talking the same thing here.)

The internal modem in mine is the older type (those hcf drivers crashed on me) and you need to disable some serial drivers and compile in the zilog serial driver.

At least that's what worked for me.

I'm not all that familiar with mac hardware so ignore this if we are talking about different iBooks.

Hmm... i /think/ that your model is a different one. Yours seems to still have a hardware modem, which is very nice for you. Later models got an usb modem, and normally mine is supposed to have such an usb modem. But i guess i could just try it of course... allthough i actually think i did try it before...

I tried the serial driver for Macs in the kernel. 'dmesg' says that i have 2 serial ports now, but i can't use them as a modem, so i suppose that i do have the usb modem.

However, when i run "lsusb", then i don't see the modem.... shouldn't there be an entry for the modem?

I have a DualUSB G3-600 iBook. I emerged hcfusbmodem and enabled CONFIG_SERIAL_8250 in the kernel.
But /etc/init.d/hcfusb freezes the system, I can only switch off the iBook and restart.
