I wondering if someone could suggest a fm for me to use.
I really like the simplicity of jaffm, but dislike the lack of features. Mainly the ability to sort files...
xffm is pretty neat, but it takes around 30s for /usr/bin to load up  and it has a really tacky ui
I don't want anything too complex like gnome's or kde's, but I also don't want anything too simple like all those console based fms...

Any suggestions? Or should I just make my own? (need to learn how to code under linux for that)

emerge gentoo (jeez, that's a busy website) - simple, powerful, double pane design, gtk+ interface - one of my favorites.

otoh, there's lots of options - search the forum for file manager

If you want something more explorer-like, look at XFE.

XFE is okay, but for some reason it comes up on my system with no title bar (running enlightenment). This is a bit annoying, but it otherwise works.

I'm surprised my old favorite, filerunner, isn't in portage. I used that for years, and even though it hasn't been supported for a looong time, it was still fast and useful.

Try Worker Is in portage. I use it and i'm happy :) Is (IMHO) much better than Gentoo FM and Rox.
