I just resently downloaded the ppc version of gentoo because of an issue i have with my powermac 5500 seris mac. When i got to get on i can only do a few things. I am locked out of everything exept for a few files and the cd-rom drive. Other than that I am ok. I just want to completely get rid of that mac os and run linux over its stupid little face. I was wondering now that i have the cd boot disk what do i do to get gentoo to run? is there a command line i have to put in or something? any help here would be wonderful! thank you!

You'll probably have a pretty hard time installing gentoo on a 5500. I have an Powermac 8500 Gentoo box that I use as a router/firewall, and getting that going was a serious struggle. I had to boot from the Gentoo 1.4 live CD (if I'm remembering right) in order to get SCSI working, building an updated glibc took several days, and hard disk space was/is a serious issue.

To get the 5500 to boot Linux at all, you'll need BootX and a small Mac OS partition. BootX isn't that difficult to configure, but it does require you to keep your kernel in the Mac OS system folder, which can be a pain. You'll also probably have to figure out the right video arguments to feed the kernel at boot time.

If you do get the machine running, it's going to be SLOW. Now don't get me wrong, I've had great fun coaxing unix onto various pieces of old mac hardware. (I have a 25mhz Centris 650 running OpenBSD.) But honestly, this project might be more trouble than what it's worth to you.

Basically, it won't work. It's WAY too slow to compile anything, and if you're using Gentoo, you're going to be compiling a lot.
