Looking to replace my ibm dual intel system with a (hopefully dual) g5 powermac. I've installed x86 gentoo plenty of times, however i've never even owned a mac and last time i used one was crt imac days.

How feasable is running gentoo on a g5? Are there any real problems with the platform, i would like the bluetooth keyboard/mouse with the bluetooth module however this isn't vital.
Also how well does dual monitor support work, i currently use xinerama with a nvidia5900 and the x86 nvidia binary drivers. Which card should i go for, the nvidia or the ati based card (games aren't an issue).

cheers

Iain

There are no ATI or NVidia drivers for Linux PPC, so you can only use xfree/xorg drivers, so no 3D acceleration

Except that Radeon chipsets do a pretty good job at 3D acceleration with the stock Xorg module. At least slightly older chipsets do, though the definition of `older' is changing reasonably fast. Nvidias are hopeless in this respect though.

Hmm, thats a pity.
Prehaps i'll play arround with the xorg nvidia driver on my system as see how it works with xinerama.

cheers

From the Gentoo ATI faq:

Question 1.1: Why use the ATI binary drivers?
The ATI binary drivers are at present the only drivers which support 3D acceleration on cards based on the R3xx chipsets. This includes recent cards such as the 9500, 9600, 9700, and 9800 series, plus the high end mobility chipsets and X-series cards.

Agreed, R3xx chips are not yet 3D accelerated with the stock modules. Considering historical data, I would venture to guess that the radeon module will support them though sooner rather than later (which was my point). It's been like this with all the ATI chipsets.

Gentoo is running on my G5 (Dual 1.8, ATI Radeon 9600pro). At this time, you can only get dual monitor support if you have an ATI card. But i do not use linux for my everyday work because under osx i'm more productive.

Some problems at this time with gentoo on a G5

  • no sound
  • the fans are louder than under osx (if you have music running its not disturbing)
  • no 3D acceleration

Yeah, but ATI didn't release the chip spec as before. They are behaving as nvidia
