Hi all,

After messing up my system due to some experimentation with the device filesystem,
I managed to get most of my functionality back. Most but not all: although I managed
to get my sound working again for multimedia stuff like xine and amarok, for some odd
reason it seems to be gone for Enemy Territory (maybe for all games, but that's the only
game I have installed right now).
When I start ET, I get the following message:
Code:

------- sound initialization -------
/dev/dsp: No such device
Could not toggle.
------------------------------------

Now, I know that /dev/dsp is fine and running, so I thought it would be a permissions
problem. I've got a games group, to which all of my users belong, and which owns ET.
So I opened up /dev/dsp completely (security, I know), to no avail. If it helps, here's the
output from ls -l /dev/dsp and ls -l /usr/games/bin/et:

Code:

ab@TheMachine:/usr/games/bin$ ls -l et
-rwxr-x---  1 root games 53 Feb 12 11:45 et
ab@TheMachine:/usr/games/bin$ ls -l /dev/dsp
lr-xr-xr-x  1 root root 9 Mar  2 09:58 /dev/dsp -> sound/dsp

I suspect I've made some silly oversight, and will be slapping my forehead vigorously
when one of you tells me what the problem is. Can anyone give me a reason for doing
this?

Try this:

Code:
echo "et.x86 0 0 direct" >/proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss
echo "et.x86 0 0 disable" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0c/oss

As root, I suppose? Did it, no change. Same error.

Nope, doesn't work. There is a /dev/adsp on my machine, tried it with
/dev/adsp1 and /dev/adsp.

Code:

------- sound initialization -------
/dev/adsp: No such device
Could not open /dev/adsp
------------------------------------
