Where does it all go?
I tried to upgrade my ximian openoffice today & after 12h of compiling it said disk full & stopped ;o(

is seemed to have 2.4 Gb used in /var/temp/portage, which i have deleted
the rest of /var/temp/portage only takes up 112mb

i emptied out everything else from /usr/portage/distfiles
/tmp now only contains 52M.
i have deletyed old kernel trees & now only have my current

I now have 3.3Gb free (9gb partition for /, /boot and /home are separate)
am going to resart compiling, but is there anywhere else i can look for space.

I am running kde 3.3. can i safely unmerge kde 3.2? or will this break things

Robin

p.s. excuse poor formatting - fell off my bike on way home from work last week & broke a crucial bone in my hand, thus typing is painfully slow

You could try
Code:
 find / -size +5120k

This will give you a list of file large than 5 Megabytes or 5120 Kilobytes.

You should be fine with 3.3 gigs free... you can try mounting your tmp on another partition, and check that /root is not growing...

3.3gb. may not be enough depending on some config settings, involving USE flags, CFLAGS and many other things like wich filesystem are you using (although in most cases that amount of free space is enough).
About kde question: you can unmerge safely, also you can erase /usr/kde/3.x, making sure the 3.3 directory remains safe.
You could also take a look and delete some files in /usr/portage/distfiles.
If that doesn't help you could also mount bind any directory that resides in other partition (with more free space) under /var/tmp/portage/openoffice-'whatever': mount -obind /mnt/anypartition-non-fat-or-ntfs/whatever_dir /var/tmp/portage/openoffice[press TAB]
