I'm a semi-newbie (some linux experience, new to Gentoo). I've got a recently installed system (on a B&W G3) and I'd like to get gnome on it. I've got X working (more or less) and was following these instructions ( http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gnome-config.xml ) and I've hit a snag:

Error: the sys-kernel/linux-headers package conflicts with another package. both can't be installed on the same system together. Please use 'emerge --pretend' to determine blockers.

What does this mean? I did try emerge --pretend, but things flew by pretty quickly. I did 'emerge gnome -- pretend | less' and there's only one line like this:

[blocks B ] sys-kernel/linux-headers (from pkg sys-kernel/linux26-headers-2.6.8.1)

I'm not sure what's going on?

This means that these two versions of linux-headers cannot co-exist in your system; you must unmerge the first if you want to install the other.

Do I need to do something other than 'emerge unmerge sys-kernel/linux-headers' ?

I did the above, but emerge gnome still says "Error: the sys-kernel/linux-headers package conflicts with another package. both can't be installed on the same system together. Please use 'emerge --pretend' to determine blockers."

I tried to unmerge again, and it said "Couldn't find sys-kernel/linux-headers to unmerge".

I too am fairly new to portage.

I just got the exact same message with Gnome and KDE. I did the unmerge also and still have the problem.

Any ideas out there?

This is gonna sound odd..I had the same problem and found the answer on another thread..but you have to EMERGE linux26-headers for gnome to emerge right. Weird but there it is. Gnome is now emergeing and compiling.

Hey, thanks for the post. Doing an emerge linux26-headers seems to have cleared up the block. I'm running the gnome emerge right now.

I wish I knew more about things to know what I'm doing. I've installed with the 2.6.10-gentoo-r6 kernel and need to install the 2.6.8.1-r2 headers. I dunno.

Anyway, I just finished going through listing all the gnome and kde packages that were causing the problem. You saved me a load of time.

Thanks again.

Thanks! That did the trick for me, too. Wow, I would never have guessed that it would work that way. Thanks, again!
