does anyone know how i can create a cd/dvd so that if i trash my system i can reinstall my well working tweaked gentoo system instead of starting from scratch?

The best way would be to just make a backup IMHO. You could tar + gzip/bz2 (I find bz2 slow, but if you don't mind leaving it on over night...) up / recursively (make sure you preserve permissions, see man tar)

An even better way would be to mirror your drives (i.e. RAID) to minimse the chance of that happening in the first place. that's expensive though.

You'll find it hard to fit your system on a CD though, it might be wise to just make a backup of *important files*, that is /etc,/home,/var/lib/portage/world and you should be able to get (roughly) back to your old system. You'll just have to compile a lot of things, but unless you do what I outlined earlier reguarly it will get out of date anyway so what I just said might be a better solution

thanks, but i was thinking more along the lines of backing up to a dvdrw, not a cd, this way i can overwrite my backup every week or so and keep my backup up to date....... this way i don't have to spend days compiling everything

Do a search for stage4 install. There are some howto's here or in the wiki.
