I have 3 pc's on a windows xp system that share a printer. I'm a noob at linux and have set up a separate box with gentoo installed.

Everything is handled by a linksys router.

My goal is to print on the windows pc printer, using my gentoo box.

Question: I know I'll need samba to join the existing network... Does this mean setting up a "Stand-Alone Server" "Domain Member Server" or a "Domain Controller" in smb.conf?

Do I need cups, as well, if I have no printer attached to my gentoo box?

Thanks for any help... (and, beleive it or not, I have read much of the doccumentation)

For starters, hulk2nd writes:

make sure that your xp machine is in your /etc/hosts. i couldnt get it working with the ip adress only.

When I open /etc/hosts I get:
Code:
$Header: /home/cvsroot/gentoo-src/rc-scripts/etc/hosts,v 1.8 2003/08/04 20:12:25 azarah Exp $

fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts

It doesn't look as if my xp machine is listed... Am I missing something?

I believe he's saying to put your XP machine on a static IP address then list it in the /etc/hosts file. So if you XP machine has the name "SomeMachine" and its IP address is 192.168.0.2, you would add the line
Code:
192.168.0.2             SomeMachine
to your hosts file under the localhost line. I never actually had to do this though (got it running before I found this guide) but it's probably a good idea so you don't run into problems.
