I just recently had an issues with getting pcmica to work with a PPC installation 2004.3 kernel 2.6.10.
I am posting this to help some people that has had trouble with this sort of thing like I have had.

The install is on a powerbook 1.25Ghz using an orinoco pcmcia card. For the longest time I could not figure out why
pcmcia would say it has started up but nothing was showing up when i would do a cardctl ident. After I thought that
I have looked at every different possibility and many different kernel compiles I missed the obvious. I forgot to
look in the /etc/pcmcia/config.opts file. I simply uncommented out the right port and memory address and my card finally lit up like a X-MAS tree.

So just a heads up to the ignorant like myself. Always check the simple stuff.
Now I just need to add the patch for the monitoring capability.

? for Gentoo team though. I love this distro. When from slack to this and I dont think i'll ever swich to anything
else. But changes are made constantly. At one time after emerge -u system i got a wireless service in my /etc/init.d/
dir and it did nothing but sit there. Is that something to look for in the future or not?

I hope this information helped some people like myself who thinks that the problem is more complex then it really is.

Thx in advance

Yes, the wireless stuff is part of the newer baselayouts, it should make setting up and using wireless a little easier.

Glad you got your pcmcia card working, sometimes it's a real pain.
