I've managed to get Gentoo up and running on my G3 Powerbook but am having a lot of trouble getting X to work. the hardware is
400mHz G3 processor,
6GB ata harddrive,
ATI Rage 128 (Mobility) graphics card,
(not sure what the soundcard is but the dmasound_pmac module works ok with it),

A couple of times I've gotten X to start and I saw what looked like a white band across the screen and my mouse appearing in two synchronised images above and below that aforementioned band. Console services in terms of ncurses programs and normal console performance are fine so I assume there's something wrong with my xorg.conf. Unfortunately (as I managed to completely break X any way by trying to recompile my system without opengl support and this in turn killed my ncurses library and left me without an editor... Looooooooooooooooong story) I had to re-do my base system install. This I did and am currently in the process of emerging the system, I'll probably then try to switch to the cascaded profile before emerging X again. I was wondering if anyone had a sample config file for a G3 Pismo Powerbook they could post that I could use if Xorg -configure does not work (from what I hear it is prone to fail on ATI cards). Anyway, any help would be much appreciated, thanks...

Please see the FAQ at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml. It should fix your problem. If you still can't get it working let us know here!

Good luck!
