Hello all, I purchased my first apple computer today. Its a nice G4 800 mhz ibook which i am very pleased with. Now, I like OSX very much, but needless to say I want gentoo on this machine. So I downloaded the PPC install cd, burned it, inserted it and rebooted. However much to my dismay, it didn't boot the the cd drive. What do I have to do to get it to boot from the cd? Remember, this is my first apple computer, so please bare with me.

Thanks in advance,
~Willy

I also dont have any knowlage in Apples, but im almost 100% sure smartbootmanager will work. check it out, its really easy to use, and theres lots of possablilties.

also, it might be as simple as your boot order in the bios. I dont know how to access the bios in a mac but you can try hiting 'del' and some F* keys at bootup. Smart boot manager also has the option to 'exit to bios', which is also a really nice feature for older machines where you cant find the key-combo to get to the bios screen.

Okay, ignore the above, it's wrong.

Firstly, to boot the cd, you have two options:
1. Hold down the 'c' key when the computer starts
2. Hold down the 'option' key when the computer starts and select the Gentoo CD icon from the list.

If this is your first ppc machine, I'd highly recommend looking at the ppc install documentation and the FAQ, there are a few gotchas that can crop up even if you're familiar with Gentoo on other platforms.

Good luck!
