So I'm basically new to Gentoo, having tried all of the other PPC distributions and found them all lacking in features and/or hardware support for my Albook (15" 1 Ghz model). I was scared away from Gentoo at first because of the lengthy installation process, but I just recently gave it a try, and did eventually get everything working except for Genkernel, which didn't compile the kernel even though the program is supposed to work on all architectures (as stated in the installation handbook). I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and also if anyone has some suggestions for possible troubleshooting?

What I did was:
Code:
 emerge genkernel
 genkernel -all

This would get genkernel to run for a short while, after which the program would stop and spit out an error message saying it couldn't perform the command. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

First off, welcome to Gentoo PPC, we're glad to have you.

In my opinion the PPC handbook needs a link to the genkernel guide for us genkernel users. Here is what I do to compile:

genkernel --kernel-config=/usr/share/genkernel/ppc/G4 all

If that doesn't help more information is avialable here: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/genkernel.xml

If you still have problems with genkernel please post the error message and version information (universal CD 2004.3, kernel 2.6.9, etc.)

cyberb0b-

Thanks for the information. I plan to start a fresh installation soon when the new PPC release is finally done being checked for security flaws (hopefully they are done by March 10th). I will try your advice and see if I can get genkernel to run properly. If I can't get it to run, then I will post the information about my kernel and Gentoo version as well as the specific error message(s). Wish me luck!
