I'm an absolute noob when it comes to both Macs AND linux, so please bare with me. :D

I like the compactness and style of the new mini and I would really like to get into linux. I'm looking at buying a new mini, but was wondering if the bluetooth keyboard and mouse (or another bluetooth mouse) will work with Gentoo. I'd really like to use the bluetooth devices to cut down on cable clutter. I have read of people installing Gentoo on the Mac Minis, but no mention of whether or not they're using the bluetooth devices. I've also searched around and can find no mention of this in the forums (if it's in here sorry/can you point me to it?). Any help/advice is much appreciated!

Thanks

I would doubt if it wouldn't work. I would seriously bet that there will be no problems with bluetooth, the kernell is just using the same standard types for bluetooth that everyone has to use. I don't think that apple is using there own close standards for bluetooth. What I am trying to say is that it should work in the macs as well as pc's. I don't have anything on stone cause I don't have a mac mini, but other mac users have use bluetooth on there macs. Heck, did you know linus torvalds uses a dual G5 apple?

Thanks for the info! It's helped me to decide to go with the bluetooth devices.

That is interesting that Linus Torvalds uses a G5. Now I can impress my co-workers with my new-found linux knowledge. :D

Thanks again.

Yes, it works! I use a MacMini with Apple bluetooth keyboard and mouse without any problems.

I used the 2004.3 mini-livecd to boot (instert cd, choose "reboot" and hold the "C"-key pressed until a blue screen shows up)
with a G4 optimized kernel to do a stage 1 install, and everything worked fine.

Off course, when you'r about to build your own kernel, don't forget to include bluetooth-support. .

I can assure you: you'll experience a new kind of freedom (_with_ linux and _without_ cables). Your co-workers are going to envy you!

Anyone offer some advice here. Bluetooth "works" but hcitool scan says no device. Does anyone know how this is working. My guess is that bluetooth is actually in the firmware/BIOS and not exposed in a traditional manner to the OS. Can anyone elaborate on how bluetooth works with linux on the mac-mini?

Bluetooth keyboard will work with gentoo from boot without doing anything but it will not actually be a bluetooth device as far as Linux is concerned until you run hid2hci.

As soon as you run hid2hci the Bluetooth adapter starts to work "in" linux, but be careful because your keyboard will stop working if you have not configured bluetooth.

Now at boot my bluetooth apple keyboard and my phone and (hope fully tonight) my logitech bluetooth headset work.

Brian,
