I have kde-3.4.0-rc1 running on my x86 desktop for a while now and it works without any glitches, so I also want it on my iBook. But when I comment out all kde packages in /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask as I did on my desktop and when I try to emerge kdebase-startkde Portage tells me:

masked by: missing keyword

and refuses to proceed. I saw that all KDE-3.4 ebuilds only have ¬x86 and ¬amd64 but no ppc keyword. So my question: How can I still install kde-3.4 on my iBook, or is it completely unsupported/broken/impossible or whatsoever?

Tom

well, if you feel adventurous enough, just add the ~ppc keyword to the kde packages till you've worked through all the packages that are needed for kde, and try to emerge them. Best to put the edited ebuilds in a portage overlay (like /usr/local/portage)

Thanks, I did just that and I'm working with KDE-3.4.0-rc1 on PPC for one day now without ANY problems :-) It works just as I know it from my x86 desktop!

I'd definitely say: Try it out if you want!

Is it possible, that you post these "updated" portage files?

Is there a way to automate this? I mean ... maybe using bash? I'm not good enough to do this.

Why are these packages not regularly available for ppc?

I compiled KDE 3.4.1 BUT it's very very slow.

When i look at top, there is a program called "kded" running. It consumes a lot of memory.

What is this program? And how can I stop it from "taking over" my ibook?!

Do you have a data CD in your drive? Try removing it (can be difficult). I've been having this problem for a while.

I have the same Problem.
KDED consumes 90% of my G3/500 Mhz even if there is no media in the drive.
What is KDED for? Can it be replaced?

I think (not quite sure) that it stands for KDE Deamon.
I am not sure you can disable it completly but you can probably
reduce its activity. Go into the KDE control center and then
in the section called "KDE components", finally go into
"service manager" there you can disable some of the function
of KDED try a few and tell us if that works.
