Hello all,

I had an older mac dumped in my lap...and thought it would be fun to play with. I don't know much about old mac, and cannot figure out how to get it to tell me what all it has in it.

It is a powermac 7600/132 PowerPc. I've opened it up, and seated a scsi cable that came loose, and seemed to keep it from booting. I got it up...and seems to have Mac OS 7.5.3

I found my way to the about this mac...saying it has 16K ram...but, also says it has 98K ram?? I'm guessing maybe it is adding a type of swap, and calling that ram too? I can't figure out how to tell me what kind of processor it is...

The CD won't open when I push the outside button...I'll go back and check cables...but, aside from that, is there a trick to opening the CD slot?

From what I can find...I'm guessing this is what they're calling an 'old world' mac? I'm looking at the install doc...does anyone have any insight and comments before getting started. The boot config. looks a bit involved if it is an old world style...

Anyway, is this box worth messing with? Not sure what I'd use it for...maybe a test web server or firewall?

If anyone knows much about this box and has suggestions, links and all...please post them...

TIA,

cayenne

I'm thinking of trying out an old PowerMac 7200/90, and don't remember right now how much mem it has (probably 32MB or 64MB, but not sure)

My major question for starting is, what liveCD may I use to get started installing Gentoo on it?
Will the current CDs (with G3, G4, G5 kernels) boot?

You'll really need at least 64Mb of ram, less is painful, but possible. The current LiveCD should work fine with that machine, but you will need to follow the BootX directions. You may also need the OldWorld kernel I've provided here: http://dev.gentoo.org/~josejx/OW-Kernel.bz2

Good luck!
