Hi everyone.

I'm new in this forums, but I'm already 6 months linux user and 2 month gentoo user.

I had my Gentoo working fine, but my partition table of my unique hd, death.
As anything work, I erase the whole partition table and begin all again (including Gentoo and Win$XP)

I' first install Win$XP and after the Gentoo (using a LiveCD basic) like I' does it before (2 month ago).
Follow the online handbook, until I reach the emerge sync step.

Then becomes an error:

Code:
# emerge --sync
>>> Starting retry 3 of 3 with rsync://156.56.111.41/gentoo-portage
>>> checking server timestamp ...

sync: getaddrinfo: rsync.gentoo.org 873: Temporary failure in name resolution
rsync error: error in socket IO (code 10) at clientserver.c(97)

!!! Rsync has not successfully finished. It is recommended that you keep
!!! trying or that you use the 'emerge-webrsync' option if you are unable
!!! to use rsync due to firewall or other restrictions. This should be a
!!! temporary problem unless complications exist with your network
!!! (and possibly your system's filesystem) configuration.

The strange thing is that before I chroot in my new "/mnt/gentoo" the network is fine, and i can connect to internet whitout problems (with links)

I read many posts where the problem was local, but I don't understand, why bring up the eth0 before chroot and not later.

Of course I follow every step in the installation guide, including the copying of resolv.conf

I connect through a DHCP server and my win$XP network connection is working.

I hope you help me guys, I need the gentoo for my work. (or I will die....)

Thanks. Bye

Did you copy /etc/resolv.conf over before chrooting (and named it correctly)?

do this....
exit your chroot completely
so that you do have your network connection
the do emerge --fetchonly sync
hopefully you will stall have access to the emerge function
if you do it will dl all the files you need for the emerge
then chroot again and emerge what you need

repeat as required :?

Hi, thaks guys. I solved the problem

The problem was very easy and stupid. I'm sorry

By some strange reason, the file in the LiveCD environment was named resol.conf and not resolv.conf

Like I was hurried to install Gentoo, doen't notice it and simply, I copied the file with the bad name to my new gentoo environment. I fix it and voila, rsync, emerge and everythink ok.

Sorry, but thaks
