This is solved, at least kind of. Somehow, by compiling coreutils with acl USE-flag set, they depended on libstdc++, which resides in /usr/lib... which is on a different partition in my system. See this post for further information: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-2193438.html

Hi there!

Since I tried to uninstall gnome (by unmerging all gnome packages and doing a revdep-rebuild), I get a strange error on boot.
When modules-update is run from the /etc/init.d/modules initscript, it tells me
Code:
Calculating module dependencies...
Failed to calculate module dependencies     [ !! ]

Apart from this, everything works fine (loading the modules etc.)
By changing the line
Code:
/sbin/modules-update &>/dev/null

to
Code:
/sbin/modules-update #&>/dev/null

in the modules initscript, I get the following on boot:
Code:
Calculating module dependencies...
cp: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Failed to calculate module dependencies     [ !! ]

Yet, libstdc++.so.5 seems to be there:
Code:
# updatedb
# locate libstdc++.so.5
/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.5/libstdc++.so.5.0.7
/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.5/libstdc++.so.5
/opt/OpenOffice.org/program/libstdc++.so.5

After searching the forums for a while, I already tried the following:

- running modules-update (force) manualy
- running depmod
- running ldconfig
- running fix_libtool_files.sh
- running gcc-config 1
- running make modules modules_install from /usr/src/linux
- rebuilt module-init-tools, gcc, fileutils, binutils, glibc
- rerunning fix_libtool_file.sh after gcc rebuild

None of the above had an effect or produced a similar error, so any ideas are welcome!

Regards,

soenke
