Hi,

I am new to Gentoo and just got a successful installation on my PowerMac G4. During compilation of Firefox, I noticed that for C++ files only a few options from what I specified for CXXFLAGS were in use. If I remember correctly, -mcpu -mtune -mstring -O2 were in use. The C files used all the options specified for CFLAGS. I noticed something similar happening for OpenOffice (only -O2 -fsigned-char were used). When I compile Firefox by myself following the build instructions on mozilla.org, I see that all optimizations I specified were used. Could someone let me know if this is normal or I have done something incorrect? Here are the options in my make.conf.

CFLAGS="-O2 -pipe -mcpu=7400 -mtune=7400 -maltivec -mabi=altivec -mpowerpc-gfxopt -mstring -mmultiple -fsigned-char"
CHOST="powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu"
CXXFLAGS="-O2 -pipe -mcpu=7400 -mtune=7400 -maltivec -mabi=altivec -mpowerpc-gfxopt -mstring -mmultiple -fsigned-char"
MAKEOPTS="-j3"

Thanks,
Aravind.

It's perfectly normal. The Firefox ebuild (in fact, most ebuilds in Gentoo) make heavy use of CFLAGS filtering (in non-jargon mode, the ebuild removes any flags from your {C,CXX}FLAGS that are known to cause problems or that have the potential to do so). There are very good reasons to do so, and unless you have a specific need to change this behavior you should leave it as it is. To change it, you have to copy the ebuild and the manually into your portage overlay and emerge using your modified version (there are a lot of tutorials on using the portage overlay on this forum and on http://gentoo-wiki.com). Still, unless you know exactly what you are doing, I advise against it, at least until you've become more familiar with how Gentoo works.

Thanks for the reply and the link. I'll stop worrying about this issue and continue learning more about Gentoo.

Aravind.
