Code:
binutils-config 1

Great !!! Pretty much solved the problem for me as well !

I had the same problem after doing a emerge --update world on my system ...
This stopped somewhere in between, producing this error ...

i'm getting the same error, however binutils-config 1 did not fix anything for me. I think my CFLAGS are messed. I changed them to the recommended options for my processor according to the 'safe cflags' list on gentoo-wiki...

here's my error:
Code:

checking whether to enable maintainer-specific portions of Makefiles... no
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... (cached) yes
checking for gawk... (cached) gawk
checking for i686-pc-linux-gnu-gcc... gcc
checking for C compiler default output file name... configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables
See `config.log' for more details.

!!! Please attach the config.log to your bug report:
!!! /var/tmp/portage/mysql-4.0.24/work/mysql-4.0.24/config.log

!!! ERROR: dev-db/mysql-4.0.24 failed.
!!! Function econf, Line 485, Exitcode 0
!!! econf failed
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, NOT this status message.

and my make.conf

Code:

CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -O3 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe"
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
USE="acl acpi alsa avi cdparanoia crypt cups dedicated directfb divx4linux dv dvd dvdr dvdread ethereal encode fbcon flash foomaticdb ftp gd gdbm g

MAKEOPTS="-j2"
#FEATURES="distcc"
#SYNC="rsync://localhost/gentoo-portage"
SYNC="rsync://rsync.namerica.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"

and the result of /proc/cpuinfo

Code:

cat /proc/cpuinfo

I'm sure i've messed up the cflags, but now I dont know what it should be....

I think you need to use '-march=athlon', & not '-march=athlon-xp', but it might be one of the 'k6' variations, i'm having trouble understanding the manual - have a look for yourself: GCC online documentation - the '-march' FLAG is in the 'hardware-specific' section... :wink:

check your use flag variable as well.. looks like it wraps multiple lines... which it shouldn't... if u use nano as your editor, use it like this:
nano -w /etc/make.conf
the -w will stop it wrapping lines...

Moved from Installing Gentoo to Duplicate Threads in favour of https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-27486.html as there's little point in having two feedback threads linked from the same FAQ. I've removed the link from there, too.
