I've got my crontab set up with what I want it to run, but it never runs. I put in the test line from the Gentoo cron howto and it never runs either:

Code:

# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE - edit the master and reinstall.
# (lido.crons installed on Mon Mar 14 06:16:27 2005)
# (Cron version V5.0 -- $Id: crontab.c,v 1.12 2004/01/23 18:56:42 vixie Exp $)
*      *      *      1-12  *       /bin/echo "i really like cron"
01   00     *     *     6  /home/james/saturday.scr
59   11     *     *     1  /home/james/sunday.scr

I'm in cron group:

Code:
$ grep cron /etc/group
cron:x:16:cron,james,richie

My clock is set to UTC = Current time:

Code:

$ date; date -u
Mon Mar 14 06:24:12 UTC 2005
Mon Mar 14 06:24:12 UTC 2005

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

You may already have checked, but just to help us see what's wrong:

Is your cron utility running? "ps -ef | grep cron | grep -v grep" will tell you. Example:

% ps -ef | grep cron | grep -v grep
root 7750 1 0 Mar13 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/cron

If cron is not running, is it set to start at boot? "rc-update show" lists the status of installed services.

# rc-update show | grep cron
vixie-cron | default

If the service is listed but there is nothing after the vertical bar, then it is not set up to start at boot. In that case, "rc-update add <your cron utility> default" will fix that. You can start it up using its boot script: "/etc/init.d/<your cron utility> start".
