I have an idea that could be useful for packages with large dependancies, or for upgrades.

These notices that show at the beginnings of emerges are useful... up to a point. But unless your sitting down and watching the window as it compiles, you're more than likely to miss the messages, which may save you a lot of time and headaches.

Specifically, lets take my example. I was upgrading MySQL from 4.0.22 to 4.0.24. But suddenly, none of my applications would work. I was frustrated and looked around for clues. Suddenly, I found that you had to run revdep-rebuild not from the ebuild, but from the forums.

I believe that a notice at the end of a long emerge or upgrade like '!!! Please refer to /root/portage.notices for any additional upgrade information' would be useful. It shouldn't be too hard to implement too, and would save some time on certain packages and generally make Gentoo a better platform for servers, where upgrading for a security bug shouldn't mean having to hunt down bug reports and go online to multiple forums.

Just a suggestion.

If you use porthole to emerge packages, it's terminal will filter out any important notices, warnings, etc. for easy review later.
