I'm just back from installing Gentoo 2004.3 on my 17'' iMac G5.

First of all: use the update3 version of PPC64 LiveCD which you can find here http://dev.gentoo.org/~tgall/install-ppc64-g5-minimal-2004.3-update3.iso.bz2
I personally had to use boot option: imacg5 video=ofonly to get it boot properly.

I did a stage3 install, using this stage: http://dev.gentoo.org/~tgall/stage3-ppc64-20041016.tar.bz2
As a snapshot i suggest to use this one: ftp://ftp.linuxppc64.org/pub/people/tgall/gentoo-ppc64/portage-20050303.tar.bz2
Remember to emerge sync and emerge -UO portage as soon as you can, since ppc64 is evolving fast.

Also notice that for me yabootconfig did not work, it couldn't locate osX properly, but tgall give us some great configs so just use this one (do not copy verbatim, adjust for your configuration ;) ) ftp://ftp.linuxppc64.org/pub/people/tgall/gentoo-ppc64/yaboot.conf-g5

As of kernels: i personally copied liveCD's kernel so far... why? because it works, and it's just as easy as " cp /mnt/cdrom/boot/*imac* /mnt/gentoo/boot ",
i think i'll keep this kernel until 2.6.12 (which will have iMac G5 specifica patches backported) comes out.

As soon as i can i'll try to install XOrg and post results / problems here.

Problems I found so far are:
1- Linux can't write nor read Hardware clock properly.... so date is messed up and can't be saved on shutdown.
2- I use Apple Bluetooth Keyboard, it works fine, but only using default keymap, i could't yet identify proper italian keymap (mac-it is messed, so is normal it)
3- without kernel option video=ofonly you can't really read anything cause everythins is REALLY messed up
4- As far as i've seen emerging gentoo-dev-sources does not download nor apply iMac G5 patches... that would be nice and easy to resolve
5- Of course thermal and audio support are not there

As a conclusion i would like to warmly thank tgall and all the guys working at ppc64 for their job... thanx people!

I successfully installed gentoo on my iMac G5 17" 1.8GHz SuperDrive rev. A using the stage1 and livecd from ther links you specified, and your kernel method. Wow, does this Mac seem quiet with fan control.

Sorry for the double post, but you can't build HAL (or, therefore, gnome) by just copying the kernel over. I had to build my own kernel. I emerge'd vanilla-sources, (2.6.13-rc1) and using the output of lspci, I figured out what I needed, and the kernel built and runs fine for now.
