I'm hoping to install Gentoo on a Performa 6400/200; in spite of references to "limited" support for old-world Macs, I see some threads in the PPC forum specifically mentioning the 6400, though some have an L3 which mine doesn't have (original 603e, original video, all stock hardware).

I've installed BootX (which I'm familiar with from running LinuxPPC (Or was it PPCLinux? The company that vanished after I bought their boxed software with a T-shirt in it) on this system in the old days, and *attempting* to run YDL more recently) and followed the directions in the Gentoo installation handbook on specifying ramdisk and kernel parameters. I used the "G3G4" kernel in hopes that would run on the 603, since I didn't see a pre-G3 kernel available on the LiveCD and I don't see mention of running anything different for this CPU.

I get a few pages of messages out of Gentoo, then there's a warning about "loop type" unspecified (loopback filesystem, perhaps?), then errors due to being unable to find some fundamental programs (probably because the filesystem isn't there), then a panic which I believe is due to 'init' dying (I'm typing this in from memory, the machine is at home and I'm at work right now).

I doubt this platform will be as useful as a Web browser as I had hoped, since the FAQ mentions no Flash (without an emulator, which I doubt would be worth it on a 200 MHz CPU) or Java support, but I was still curious how much use I could get out of it.

At the moment, OW systems are "unsupported" in that we haven't really tested the install on any OW machines. Right now, the plan is to officially support OW systems for the 2005.1 release, but I think I can help you get your system booting with 2004.3.

Add loop=squashfs to your kernel parameters in BootX, that should fix the loop error you're getting. Feel free to let us know if you run into any other problems.

As for the usage of such a system, I've got an 8500/180 that has been happily routing and serving web content for a few years now, they're still useful! X will run on them, but don't expect too much in the performance department.

Good luck!
