Hi all. I am in a heavily geek period, and wanting to try all different kinds of operating systems. Not because I am fed up with my gentoo (I love it), but just for fun.

I have been reading about FreeBSD, and it looks that it has a lot in comom with our dear gentoo (well, it is certainly the other way around, but anyway). I don't want to launch a flame war, So I won't ask which is better. But what I'd like to ask people who have used both is : what are the strong points and short-commings of each? what differentiate them?

I have read texts comparing linux and bsd, but they didn't really take gentoo into account. So explanations like "BSD has to be configure mostlty by hand, but offers the power of the port system" didn't help be a lot.

And just to clarify, I have used several linux system, but never used BSD.

And I'd be using that system as a mainly as a desktop (well, a laptop, to be specific), and to do some programming from time to time. And I am the kind of guy who love to be up to date (I emerge -uD world several times a week), but i like stability (very limited number of ~x86 packages, no crazy CFLAGS). Just in case updating follows different rythms on the two systems.

EDIT: oops. looks like I'd better search the forums before posting. I'm not really the first one to ask this question. I'll read others, and then maybe, re-ask questions I still have.

You might consider asking them here: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-272455.html
