I can't seem to find a good reference on the various -march settings for CFLAGS...

I'm installing the x86 Gentoo (32-bit, not 64-bit) on an AMD 64 3000 (Winchester) and I'm wondering what the appropriate -march setting is. Is it "athlon-xp"?

Thanks for the prompt response, but unfortunately it doesn't answer my question.

From the list I can tell what to use for -march if I'm running 64-bit, but NOT what to use if I'm running 32-bit (x86).

Can someone tell me what I would use here?

Fomr what I understand, you can still use "-march=athlon64" for 32-bit systems and it will optimize for 32-bit AMD64 if you only have a 32-bit compiler installed. I'm probably mistaken, however...

OK, from everything I've read, the appropriate setting for an AMD64 chip is:

-march=k8

However, *NOTHING* anywhere seems to tell me if "k8" means "64-bit" or not! Is "k8" either 32-bit or 64-bit, depending on your CHOST, etc? How can I tell? Or does "k8" mean hard-coded "64-bit"?

I think the 32-bit/64-bit decision is made by using your CHOST settings (i[3456]86-pc-linux-gnu or x86_64-pc-linux-gnu?). Again though I've not much experience with x86-64 so I'm likely mistaken...

Thanks for the pointer!

To summarize, the march should be althon-xp for amd64 running in 32-bit mode from what the thread pointed to says. In addition -msse2 should be specified.
