I use mplayer for everything from dvd over normal listening to streaming.
(I use it on CLI, don't know if there's a nice and fancy GUI for it)

try BMP - it is just XMMS but improved
The reason mplayer pulls in XMMS is because you have "xmms" in your USE flags.

IF "xmms" is set mplayer will be compiled to reference a xmms lib to proved some sound decoding.

I use BPM and have mplayer and really hate having xmms on my systems - but hey, what you gonna DO?

mplayer is great, and includes the gmplayer GUI.

Lately I've been using amaroK, even though I hate kde. <-- Although amaroK isn't just a media player... more of a music management system.

I checked out all the buzz last night about amroK and well. I'm in love. Beats the crap out of beep-media-player or xmms. But its not something you'd use if you don't give a crap about management or don't like heavy memory usage. But I've gottta say it's probably the best media player I've ever seen.

XMMS is good though for fast mp3 selection. Beep-media-player is a bit slow to me.

MPlayer is good for videos, and MPD owns for music.

amarok? does it run well in gnome environment (with kde libs)?
how is it a better player (besides that its a music management)?
if u need quick play - xmms,mplayer,bmp,mp3blaster
library/management - rhytmbox,mpd,amarok

Another option is xine. It can play both music and movies including DVDs.
