Here's a tip I found by accident when I started (with Suse) - and I still use it :)

To monitor your running processes you can use top. This is a little clunky but usable.

For a much better implementation - emerge htop .

This displays color graphs at the top as well as running processes below. It also permits you to (re)nice them on the fly without trying to watch the PID scroll up and down using the function keys.

Thanks for the tip, can I use it even if I'm not a linux n00b? :P Looks a lot like midnite commander with the curses interface.

Why does it think I'm using 1/2 as much memory as top??

Looks like it removes the buffers/cached stuff from the total.

htop is the best top-like monitor ! it`s very customizable and good-looking

I've always likeg gtop. It's a nice gui on top of top (pardon the pun :lol:).
