My cd drive is shot on my clamshell ibook(firewire). It works probably 100% never. So i am having a hard time booting into the Live Cd (duh). I was wondering if I could boot off of my 512mb flash drive.

Or maybe netboot (I have an x86 RH9 and x86 Gentoo (2.6.11-gentoo-r4) box, windows xp, and of course, OSX at my disposal)

I really want this to boot up so i can chroot into the install environment.

There are quite a few distro's that run right from USB, i've used them myself... I forget the names of all the ones I tried but the one that I remember is called SLAX (based on slackware)... the URL is http://slax.linux-live.org

You can boot up the live cd on another computer and install to a usb key that way, the FAQ for setting it up is at (http://slax.linux-live.org/doc_install.php#inst2flash).

The problem is that usb key distros aren't very full fledged... Minimal at best. So you aren't really going to be able to use it like a live cd as far as I know. I'd search for a gentoo related usb key distro that might allow you to use portage and such.

Of course you also need to be able to boot from a usb key in the first place, which can be a problem on older laptops... My fiance's Acer TM292EXC doesn't have the capability and it's less than a year old. :(

Good luck.
