the default gentoo kernel-2.4.28-r8 failed to compile manualy & failed to boot after building it with genkernel so i compiled a new kernel-2.6.11.5 " with the same config which hacked & running nice on fedora " but it compiled without initrd image only the vmlinuz file is here !! is this normal ?? and if , how i could configure boot options to boot this type of kernel
My gentoo root is /dev/hda1
thanks alot.

Hey there.....
Well, heres what i know...
If you use genkernel, you will get an initrd image, which will be placed in the /boor/ directory and that should be pointed at when doing the oot/grub/grub.conf

You compiled the kernel without the genkernel the second time, as i understood, so you wont get the initrd.
After you compiled the kernel, you need to make the bzInmage, which is needed to be copied under /boot/, along with the system.map file and .config.

so heres what you do after you select the options in the kernel....
Quote:
make dep && make bzImage modules modules_install

This will create everything wee need.....
Quote:
cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/kernel-x.x.x
cp System.map /boot/System.map-x.x.x
cp .config /boot/config-x.x.x

So, you copied the kernel and everything....you just need to make your grub.conf...like this...
Quote:
default 0
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz

title=<Title you want the System to have eg:Linux Gentoo 2.x.x>
root (hd0,0)<directory where kernel is eg:/boot/kernel-x.x.x>
kernel (hd0,0)<path to the kernel eg:/kernel-x.x.x> root=/dev/<root partition here eg: /dev/hda1>

uhmm, hope its usefull
c ya
