This seems like an easy question - but i can't seem to find the answer. the handbook seemed to touch on it in the context of Portage - but I wanted to be clear.

If i want compile any old program from source - do I use the standard //configure make make install? Does portage keep up with this in any way?

Please post into the correct topic, in this case Portage and Programming. This is not the place for "installation of program" questions.

Generally the software in question will have instructions - say a readme.
But generally a Makefile will be shipped, and so yes, configure, make, and make install will usually get the job done.

Portage is oblivious in such cases - I work on the basis that if it ain't emerged, it ain't known (personal belief, not known fact).

I should have told you to wait, since I asked the mods to move this one. Now it is a dup of your other topic.

Please don't - ask a mod to move it instead. Since this pretty cluttered now, I'll move this one to Dupes.

Moved from Unsupported Software - see https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-312862.html.
