Hey - I've been using XMMS for awhile, but it likes to spit out really LOUD white noise, sometimes, instead of playing my music.

This is one of those 'sometimes' problems, where sometimes XMMS works correctly, sometimes it doesn't. I've tested it with all types of files (mp3s, flacs, oggs, and CDs), and they all yeild similar results - I've also tried both ALSA and OSS output plugins. Both give me some white noise.

Alsaplayer plays everything crystal clear, which is odd

Any ideas?

I'm not running gnome or KDE or anything (xfce4, as desktop, gentoo 2.6.10, TiBook 1.0 Ghz)

Thanks

-Justin
Edit:
it seems that alsaplayer ALSO spits out white noise... I was just getting lucky, before...
Here's my /etc/modules.d/alsa file:

# Alsa 0.9.X kernel modules' configuration file.

# ALSA portion
alias char-major-116 snd
# OSS/Free portion
alias char-major-14 soundcore

I noticed the same thing on my Mac Mini with xmms running in xfce4. At first I thought the white noise came only from files created using a variable bitrate but I finally tracked the problem to mp3 files created by a friend of mine. He said he used Itunes on an Apple computer with a variable bitrate to rip his files. I used Windows with Musicmatch and both variable and set bitrates.. All mp3s created by me (thousands of them) play fine. Its just the Itunes on the Mac created ones that give the white noise. Wish I had more info but thats all he could tell me about how he created them.

It's definantly not my mp3's... I rip all my music straight from the CDs to mp3 and flac using cdparanoia and LAME/FLAC, respectively.

I'm going to re-install gentoo tonight, and make another stab at it (uninstalled Gentoo when Tiger came out.. sorry!)
