I'm wondering what's best:
having the modules voor chipset, graphics card, soundcard, network built-in or as modules so you can put them in /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6

imho,

-if you are going to need something loaded all the time then build it in

- if you are going to want to load and unload something then modularize it

Yep, as Hayl wrote, the stuff you need at boottime, like everything that has to do with getting access to the root filesystem you have to compile in anyway. I just put in everything I need at boot, with the exeption of the nvidia-kernel and the network filesystems (I mount an SMB share at boottime). Everything else I need, I have compiled as modules.
This keeps my kernel clean, it loads fast as it doesn't need to calculate any module dependencies.
Sure you could compile everything as modules, but I wouldn't do it. You would need to use something like modules.autoload.d or coldplug to see what you need to boot, and everytime you change something, you'd need to edit the autoload file. And I don't want an extra program that just uses time to start to load my modules. Keeping stuff compiled in the kernel, you just need to make changes once and be done with it, without having to sacrifice time when starting the system.
