Hello, I just got a G3 iBook and installed Gentoo on it. Everything went pretty well (I have installed gentoo several times before on an x86 machine) until I rebooted. yaboot brings me to the login prompt with a little flashing cursor but when I type nothing happens!! This is my first foray into Gentoo on PPC. If I reboot into the install environment I can type again, my /etc/rc.conf KEYMAP setting is set to "us" and I don't know of any other keyboard settings I need to set. My experience has been that keyboards are generally well supported and this seems like a really wierd problem to me. Help please?

Thanks,
Steve

Do you have ADB support compiled into the kernel? Older *books have ADB keyboards and trackpads.

That did it, thanks bruda!

for anyone else with the same problem here's exactly what I did:

/*----------------
boot into install environment
----------------*/

mount /dev/hda4 /mnt/gentoo
chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
env-update && source /etc/profile
cd /usr/src/linux-2.6.10
make menuconfig
/*------------
added support for adb in
---->device drivers
----->macintosh devices
exit and save
-------------*/
make all && make modules_install
cp vmlinux /boot/linux-2.6.10-r6 // (I just copied it over my old kernel image to avoid redoing alot of stuff)
cp System.map /boot/System.map-2.6.10-r6
cp .config /boot/config326
exit //(chroot)
yabootconfig --chroot /mnt/gentoo/
reboot

TADA! I can type.

Hi,

I have exactly the same issue. I first compiled the kernel without ADB
(following the doc).
After a reboot, I couldn't use the keybord (but any usb keybord works !).
Following the answer in this thread, I recompiled the kernel with ADB support.
Same result : no keyboard after the boot, except if I use a usb one.
I own a G4 (933 Mhz) white ibook (baught 05/2004)
Can someone help me ?

Thanks,

Ibookjul

after adding :

Code:

Device Drivers  --->
USB support  --->
<*> EHCI HCD (USB 2.0) support
<*> OHCI HCD support
<*> UHCI HCD (most Intel and VIA) support

it now works !
Thanks to forum users,

I have a new iBook, and got the same problems. Do I need USB+HID in kernel rather than modules for keyboard to work ?
