This bug has been reported. Developpers are tying to fix it.

how long has this issue been outstanding, and how long do they tippically take to fix. This is my first time at trying gentoo and am not sure of the processes.

Try my temporary solution https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-310611-highlight-.html

From my own experience, nvidia-kernel-1.0.6629-r4 is the only version that is stable on the latest kernels.

I don't know exactly what caused it, at this moment I have the same problem, but just about 2 days ago I could emerge all nvidia drivers(6111, 6629 and 7167) on 2.6.11-gentoo-r4 without any problem.

Oh wait, now that I think about it, I was busy trying to get my videocard to run stable so I disabled all AGP in the kernel to get that out of the equation. So if you can use NvAGP for your chipset I suggest you try disabling AGPGART in the kernel and see if it does work then, at least until this issue gets resolved(or just use the new version, 7167 instead of 6629 if you dare :P)
