Hello all,

I recently did an emerge -u world, which included upgrading xmms and alsa to the latest versions:

xmms: 1.2.10-r13
xmms-alsa: 1.2.10
alsa: 1.0.8

Things got a bit hairy after this. Firstly, I didn't get any sound from my Audigy card. I fixed this by increasing the 'Front' playback volume in alsamixer. Strangely, this volume setting doesn't seem to be remembered after rebooting, but that's minor for now...

A number of audio applications are now randomly crashing when others try to play. Here's a list of what crashes what so far:

* Playing something in xmms (using alsa plugin) crashes kmix.
* More generally, almost anything crashes kmix.
* Playing something in xmms crashes alsamixer too.
* Audacity sometimes crashes xmms.
* Nothing seems to crash audacity (obviously good coding!).
* Doing "aplay something.wav" also crashes xmms.

Has anybody had similar problems with the latest version of alsa? It's been causing other problems elsewhere too:

I don't think this is a problem with xmms, since aplay can crash kmix all by itself. I'll try downgrading to alsa-lib-1.0.7 to see if it makes any difference.

For reference, here's my /etc/modules.d/alsa file:
(The second sound card is onboard, but I rarely use it. Haven't tested with that card yet.)
Code:

alias char-major-116 snd
alias char-major-14 soundcore

alias snd-card-0 snd-emu10k1
alias snd-card-1 snd-via82xx

alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss

alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss
alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/midi snd-seq-oss

options snd cards_limit=2

I added the following to /etc/portage/package.mask:

Code:
=media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.8

... and downgraded to alsa-lib-1.0.7. This fixed all the problems.

It looks like 1.0.8 is causing some issues - has anybody else experienced similar problems?

I have this problem too. Whenever I try to play anything in XMMS or BMP they crash and whenever anything else plays a sound it crashes XMMS/BMP. I too have an emu10k1 card. What kernel are you running? Do you use udev?
