Greetings,

I just installed the newly released gentoo 2005.0

I installed metalog but now I want to switch to syslog-ng

i installed both, but when I run

rc-update add syslog-ng default I get the following message
Quote:
penguin root # rc-update add syslog-ng default
* syslog-ng added to runlevel default
* Caching service dependencies...
* Service 'metalog' already provide 'logger'!;
* Not adding service 'syslog-ng'...
* rc-update complete.

So my question is how do I switch loggers

Code:
emerge unmerge metalog
emerge syslog-ng

Please don't add a spurious "not solved" to your subject - we get that.

You also may need to manually delete the init script if unmerging metalog does not do it for you.
Code:
# rc-update del metalog
# rm /etc/init.d/metalog

I am trying to solve the same problem, but even after removing metalog and deleting the init script, I still get the warning about metalog providing the logger service.

Any other ideas?

I just reinstalled gentoo, but I needed to install flex before I could install syslog-ng

The problem is not really solved then. Re-installation is just a work-around. I, for one, would never re-install my system just to change my system logger.

I am looking into changing my system logger though. Doing more research on which one is good for me... I do want to find a closed case of someone successfully switching to a different system logger. ... still searching the forums.

edit: ok here is something that may work-- sure beats a re-install!

That seems to have done it.

Thanks.

What logger did you switch from/to?

(I'm still waiting for someone to write a system lager!)

I switched from Metalog to Syslog-ng. Primarily becuase I needed to be able to recieve remote logging for something here at work. And I happened to have a Gentoo box sitting doing almost nothing.

But I still typically use and prefer metalog. Easier to configure, but no tcp or udp logging. =(

Please see https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-271083.html

Moved from Installing Gentoo.
