I get this message below... there is no reason for this as far as I can tell. I have followed the instructions to the letter, and I have always downloaded from the same mirror site, just to make sure that I received the correct and up to date information. This is a fresh install, and not an update. Now if there are issue with the manual, and either it hasn't been updated for the new portage or something else... I'm lost and just a wee bit frustrated.

Should I just buy the CD and get everything there or should I attempt an online download again. I don't need to spend another 4 hrs downloading, installing, partitioning, and everything else just to see if it doesn't work again.

# rm make.profile
# ln -s ../usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/PPC/2004.0 make.profile

Which version of the LiveCD did you download - maybe 1.4 or something as old?
However, this error message does not mean you have to make a new install. You can just follow the advice and do
Code:
emerge -n '>=sys-apps/portage-2.0.51'
cd /etc/
rm make.profile
ln -s ../usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2005.0 make.profile

The LiveCD I downloaded was version :ppc-universal-2004.3
The Portage was: portage-20040926

Both were from the Pair Networks Mirror.

So I'm lost... and BTW I attempted what it told me to do, and it gave me an error which I forgot to write down... but it pretty much said that I can't continue.

Wait... you've got a ppc and portage tells you to use a x86 profile? That sounds strange :?

Ok - maybe the suggestion in the PPC forum helps? https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-271915.html

I can move this thread over to the PPC forum if you like - you probably get more help there.

Edit: moved from installing.

As far as I know this is telling you portage has been updated since the CD image you used and telling you how to get the new version. It is not a big download, just follow the instructions and all will be well very quickly.

As I stated before, I did follow the direction and for some reason it gave me an error and would not allow me to continue.

The directions above are slightly wrong. If you're just copying them word for word, it won't work.

Basically, with the 2005.0 release, we've switched to cascaded profiles. There is a sticky about about switching profiles which can give you more background, but simply: As a result of the switch, we've set the older profiles as depreciated as they no longer will be updated. You should switch your profile as soon as possible to ensure the health of your Gentoo system:

Code:
emerge -n '>=sys-apps/portage-2.0.51'
cd /etc/
rm make.profile
ln -s ../usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/ppc/2005.0 make.profile

Finally, if you would like more help in the future, when you get an error message, at least describe it. Just saying that it doesn't work doesn't give us enough information to tell you what's wrong.

sram: Well, I'd suspect that you need to emerge sync in order to get the latest profile, but it looks like you're doing this on an x86 system, I can't really help you there since I don't have an x86 box.

Good luck!

but my portage is dated 31 march ... i guess that is pretty recent.
Code:
>>> starting rsync with rsync://172.31.76.254/gentoo-portage...
>>> checking server timestamp ...
Welcome to Navya's rsync server!
-----------------------------------
Current Portage is dated: 31/03/2005
