Rhythmbox runs and plays music fine as root. As non-root, I get this message when I try to play a song:
Code:
DEBUG: gstgconf: error parsing pipeline osssink
no element "osssink"

** (rhythmbox:16531): WARNING **: No GConf default audio sink key and osssink doesn't work
Got error opening "file:///mnt/nUser/Music/song.mp3": Could not create audio output element; check your settings
The user is part of the audio group. And I don't have gstreamer-properties. So how do I change this osssink to alsasink? I recall that I fixed this before long ago, but I have since forgotten how. Searching the forum has yielded no solutions.

Also, using the command:
gst-launch-0.8 sinesrc ! alsasink
does produce sound as a non-root user. So it seems that at least something is right with my gstreamer setup.

This is madness. I cannot believe a music player requires this much setup. I've searched high and low for a solution, but have found none. Does anyone know how to setup this "GConf default audio sink key"?

edited parent post to say "gst-launch-0.8 sinesrc ! alsasink" instead of "gst-launch-0.8 sinesrc ! osssink"

i'm going to try unmerging everything and re-emerging. this is getting stupid.

run gconf-editor (it's in portage) and change system -> gstreamer -> 0.8 -> default -> audiosink to alsasink or esdsink or whatever soundserver you are using.

thank you for the belated reply. i had switched to xfmedia (which uses xine-lib) and was about to write my own mpc plugin for it. but you've saved me from the effort. xine-lib appears to have serious quality problems in the bass region in mp3 playback.

oh fuck it all. rhythmbox now just segfaults upon importing a folder.

(and why not "open" or "add" instead of "import"? oh well.)

the segfault is apparently a known issue. Browse the rhythmbox FAQs for info.

I had a similar problem to the first post, where I could only start rhythmbox as root. As root, I tried running gstreamer-properties as well as editing keys in gconf-editor, but this did not fix it. What fixed it was to run gstreamer-properties as the normal user and switch the sink to alsa. I guess this kind of makes sense. I dont know if this helps or not.
