I'm installing a new gentoo 2005.o ppc on an Ibook G4. When I try to compile my new kernel, I get this error when i do a "make all"

mm/built-in.o(.rodata.cst4+0x0): relocation truncated to fit: R_PPC_ADDR32 empty_zero_page+40000000

I cannot go on, please help.

Turn off himem support. It's a known upstream issue with GCC and the kernel.

As a slightly off-topic question, what does one do if one needs highmem support? I have 1G of RAM so I do need it.

The question is off-topic because I have not encountered the issue (2.6.10-gentoo-r6 compiles fine with gcc 3.4.3 20041125), I am just curious. By the way, what is the kernel version that has this problem?

Sorry to ressurect this thread, but I'm curious. I was using the kernel config that came with the latest livecd -- so obviously they got himem to work somehow! With the same version of gcc no less. There must be a trick.

Which kernel/compiler/binutils are you using? It should work with the versions marked stable.
