I know this question has probably been asked many times but I have searched through the forums and have not found what I am looking for. So here goes nothing…

I have just finished a very challenging Gentoo install. Needless to say I am extremely happy with myself. I would like to reward myself by emerging a few games, opening a bottle of merlot and wasting the night away.

The problem is the amount of games in portage is staggering…

Question? What are some really cools games? I like all games so it doesn’t matter what you recommend. I don’t want to have to use WINE or insert a CD or anything like that. I just want to emerge it, and play it.

What are you favorite games that fall in the category?

If your into the tetris style games, or something like that, Frozen Bubble is really cool. Also America's Army if your into fps.

emerge enemy-territory ! My favorite first person shooter by far. Very addictive, you have been warned ;)
(requires OpenGL and Internet connection)

If you don't have that, I would recommend xgalaga (galaga/space invaders clone), heroes or lbreakout2

Enjoy!

Thanks for the tips guys...

I have say that I am a litle dissapointed that more people didn't recommend games. I guess thier really aren't that many good games in Gentoo portage. So much for the hype...

Like you thought, this has been asked many times. You're inability to find it indicates more about your [lack of] persistence than anything else.

Code:
emerge ut2004-demo

That ought to keep you entertained for a few hours.:D

PS: You will of course need to get hardware acceleration working to run a lot of these games, which could possibly add even more time to your frustrating install.

Before you go flaming somebody you should really read my post.
Code:
…I have searched through the forums and have not found what I am looking for….

I don’t want to have to use WINE or insert a CD or anything like that. I just want to emerge it, and play it……..

What are you favorite games that fall in this category?

I had already search the forums and did not find what I was looking for, i.e games that you can simply emerge and play. I had already found the thread in your (broken) url and that was not what I was looking for.

Regarding my persistence level, I have never installed Linux before and for my first install I succefully did a Gentoo stage 1. I got hooked, I wanted to learn more, I decided to try a LFS install. I needed more space on my box so I reinstalled a stage 3, (which for some reason was harder then stage 1). Trust me…I know how to search. And my persistence level is just fine,

Most important….dude, chill out. You’re too tense. Learn yoga, smoke a joint, get laid, do whatever it takes. Being wound up like that is not good for you. I’m worried about you man. I see by your amount of post that you have made this your home-away-from-home, that’s cool, everybody has their goals and hobbies. But come on man. It’s only a forum. In a forum (brace yourself, in fact, you might want to sit down for this) p e o p l e a s k q u e s t i o n s. (I know, it’s a novel concept)

You’re probably a great dude who has helped many people and I admire you for that, but don’t lose that all important thing called perspective.

I have no problem listening. I'm just saying I didn't do anything wrong. I get that he is a long time contributor here. In "forum world" does that mean that respect only goes one way...? No. To get respect, you give it. How many posts you managed to accumulate has nothing to do with respect.

There are some people who have earned it though. And Charlieg has.

Unfortunately Charlieg leaves people outside to sleep in the cold even though he invites them to stay at his house. (a friend who was at the last GentooUK meeting)

Understood. I can live with that.

The problem is with this sentence. You are not helped quickly enough and immediately you start flaming. That's why charlieg reacted that way.

Try wesnoth if you like strategy games btw
Nethack is also fun. If you want a graphical frontend for nethack try falconseye.

Yea, you did actually, you started flaming that you did not get enough suggestions soon enough(although they can be found easily on this forum). The question is OK, just don't start flaming if you don't get enough response in a couple of hours.

For suggestions, just browse through /usr/portage/games-*/ for loads of suggestions.

You could try tuxracer, pingus, chromium for some games that I tend to play when I don't feel like heavy commercial games. Also, if you like adventures, try emerging games-rpg/queen. This game was originally commercial but it has been made fully freeware(and can thus be downloaded by portage so you don't need CD's or anything) and can be played on about any platforum using scummvm which is also in portage. It's imo a very cool game.

I always considered a flame to be some sort of direct attack or insult against another person. But apparently I am wrong.

I stand corrected.

Thanks for the games.

In my defense, I was so drunk that I had passed out. I blame the alcohol, or more specifically the people that served me drinks all night.

BigUns wrote:

I wasn't attacking or insulting you. Just making an observation. Like I said, it took me less than 10 seconds to find an example link (even if I did post it brokenly, thanks BlackEdder for correcting). Searched for 'good games' and it was about 15th in the list. Of course, you might argue I have more forum searching experience, but it'd be a weak argument. You just weren't very persistent.

Still I'm not gonna argue it any more (beyond this post, that is). I'm not picking a fight nor wanting to discourage a new forum member.
