For some reason when I installed Gentoo a couple days ago I could only get the 2.4.28 kernel. How can I emerge the kernel-sources for 2.6? I'm sure this has an easy solution, but I can't find any posts that have this same issue.

I have used emerge --sync to get my portage tree up to date.

any ideas? :?

have a look at /usr/portage/sys-kernel/
you will find all available kernel sources there. gentoo-sources is generally a good kernel to start with.

There are two kinds of 2.6 Sources

Use
Code:
emerge gentoo-sources

for the gentoo sources or for the normal 2.6 kernelsource

Code:
emerge vanilla-sources

but shouldn't gentoo-sources be 2.6? When i do emerge -search gentoo sources it says that the latest version available and installed is 2.4.28-r8. I would think that the latest should be 2.6. Have I not updated something somewhere?

I did emerge --sync about half an hour ago. All i can see in /etc/portage is an empty directory: sets/

I used the minimal live cd and then went through a stage2 install.

I think 2.4 is gentoo-sources, and 2.6 is gentoo-dev-sources. Try gentoo-dev-sources.

They recently have been merged. atm, there is no gentoo-dev-sources any more.

don't you have to change you portage profile to 2005.0? for that change to occur?

i tried emerge =sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.9-r9, it says that the ebuilds are masked by profile.

i just checked my /etc/portage/profile.mask and i couldn't find an entry. any suggestions?

Yep, turns out i was using 2005.0 2.4 profile. I switched the link and now I can see the 2.6 kernel in emerge -s.

In case when moving from 2004.3 profile to 2005.0 profile you linked to 2.4, just relink to the default 2005.0 profile (which is 2.6)

ln -snf /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2005.0 /etc/make.profile
