I'm doing a stage 1 install, and all went well untill emerge -e system.
at ncurses instalation I get this error

cd misc && make DESTDIR="" all

make[1]: Nothing to be done for `all'.

!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, NOT this status message.

my CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
and USE="gtk gnome -qt -kde dvd cdr alsa"

I've tried to change CFLAGS, and even started over the instalation process, but still got the error.
TIA

Hi I had the same problem & found a solution posted in the forums.

Check the posts under this header :
[SOLVED]Stage 1 bootstrap fails in step 6: ncurses c++ error

These are the instructions that worked for me

------------
1) Change your USE flag to say USE="build bootstrap"
2) emerge ncurses
3) Change your USE flags back

Then continue on emerging...
------------

I have done as above & "emerge -e system" is still running & looking good so far.

Whoops .... counted my chickens too early. Same problem again. Well, back to the drawing board ...

After following steps 1-3, I tried emerge -e system, but this stopped as well.

Then I tried "emerge system" & found that this one stopped as well.

So, I then read some more posts, which led me to :

"emerge --nodeps gcc"
This completed with no problems, but warned me to update the env vars by running "source /etc/profile", which I did.

Then once again, I went on to "emerge system"

The system has now started emerge (7 of 55) and has therefore crossed step 6 (where stopped earlier). It is still proceeding merrily. I will update my post once I have more results.

Hope this helps ....

Cheers,
Sea

Ok, I fixed it. I did two things, but I don't know witch one fixed it. First I restarted the instalation process from scratch including partitioning the disk. Then I noted that bootstrap took a lot longer. I think the first time something got wrong during this part. Then I also downloaded today's portage snapshot.
So now everything is going smoothly.
