I seem to be having trouble getting a working Java plugin for Firefox on 2005.0.

First, I installed Firefox, and blackdown-jre-1.3.1. I installed that plugin, and when it didn't work, found that I had to use Java 1.4.1+ with Firefox.

Next, I installed IBM-JRE-1.4.2. However, even though the ebuild mentions a plugin, there isn't one to be found.

Help?

ajacocks@ares$ emerge -p mozilla-firefox ibm-jre-bin ibm-jdk-bin

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild R ] www-client/mozilla-firefox-1.0.2
[ebuild R ] dev-java/ibm-jre-bin-1.4.2
[ebuild R ] dev-java/ibm-jdk-bin-1.4.2
[ /usr/portage/app-portage/profuse ]
ajacocks@ares$ uname -a

There is no Java plugin available on PPC for recent Mozilla-based browsers. I have tried recently gcjwebplugin but it did not quite work for me (it installs fine and apparently works, but does not show any applet I tried). You may want to use Konquerror for your Java needs.

You shouldn't use it anyways, it has major security risks

Use the recent Opera-8.5 . This is the only browser I've found for java on ppc.
It uses the actual jvm instead of a plugin.

Yeah Opera can handle Java as davidgurvich said, but it has some strange focus problems on my machine: After the applet gains the focus (after entering the mouse etc.) all the other Opera and website form controls don't react anymore (e.g. on keyboard input). Closing the page "solves" the problem... :-(

I had an initial problem that went away when I loaded an applet. Opera crashed the first few times.
I think it might be that Opera compiles some module depending on your version of java.

EDIT:
You can install ibm-jdk-bin-1.5_beta1 and it has a plugin that works well with firefox.
