I've been trying to install Gentoo on one of my Mac's with the 2005.0 release universal CD. Everything went fine until I tried to compile the kernel where it now consistently crashes out whilst trying to compile the Netfilter components saying that too few ARGS are being passed to a function.

(I can't give an exact copy of the out put as the Mac in question is at my home where I have no internet connection and I'm submitting this from work).

Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening and is there some way to fix it? So far as a result of various problems I have never been able to do a networkless install on a PPC machine with Gentoo, in 2004.3 it was the lack of adequate OpenFirmware drivers and now in 2005.0 it's this stupid kernel issue.... Although I admit Gentoo is the best distro I've ever used I would very much appreciate it if the Universal live CD's were actually of any use to people trying to do networkless installations on platforms other than x86... :(

Sorry you're unhappy with the results, but we can't possibly try every single variation.

A few questions:
What is the error you're getting?
Can you provide your config?
Why not just disable the component that's failing and upgrade the kernel at a later time when you can access the net?

Good luck!

I have had the same trouble with 2005.0 (see https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-326115-highlight-2005.html?sid=6160f93784e5df27600ae1dba0fb379c). Using genkernel avoids the trouble (the handbook contains an error, zcat to kernel-config-2.6 instead of kernel-2.6!)
Having solved that issue I got stuck with yaboot. Tell me if you have more luck.

2005.0 is my third live CD I am trying, with 2004.1 & 2 it was the package CD causing trouble. Xorg and KDE/gnome, none of the pavkages were complete, installation was cancelled.

I recently saw a comment that Gentoo seems not to get out of the beta stage. That is what I think, too.

Hi, I did the networkless install on my powerbook and I had the same trouble the first time around. What I did was disable the netfillter option or whatever it was when configuring the kernel. I think you can get away with disabling network support entirely as a starter. It's a networkless install anyway... Once gentoo is installed, you cansee what options work.

BTW, I installed with some networking options disabled and then installed drivers for my wireless usb thingy and then did emerge --sync which gave me new kernel sources -- well, it's r6 rhatner than r8 as on the CD -- and compiled that kernel which seemed to go better.
