Booting off a JFS root partition under PPC64 did not work for me. I am now considering a smallish ext2 boot partition (50 MB) and a JFS root partition. Could that solve things? When I tried the JFS root partition yaboot returned an "unknown or corrupted" filesystem - which it wasn't :)

I'd recommend you go with an ext2 boot partition. I've been tempted at times to make a reiser4 or reiserfs boot partition but then what's the point? It's not like we reboot that much with Linux anyways  It offers no advantages to use anything other than ext2, just overcomplicates things.
