I have to reinstall gentoo on my ibook 14" and I'm thinking how to solve some annoying problems I had the first time...
I normally use fluxbox (for the mouse it's not a problem, I can attach a wheel usb mouse), but the keyboard layout is a real pain (I use it in italian).

I'd like to use the apple key as alt (without having to press fn all the times) and use directly F1-F2 still without using fn, is there a way to do it??

Or how can I change the keyboard layout??

thanks in advance

I don't quite follow you... On my Finnish keyboard there are on the lowest row from left to right: fn, ctrl, alt, apple, space... I suppose the Italian keyboard is about the same. What's wrong with the alt there? Or are you referring to AltGr/RightAlt? Here's how I enabled the use of the Apple key as AltGr in /etc/X11/xorg.conf (I don't remember any more where I originally copied this from):
Code:
Section "InputDevice"
   Identifier  "Keyboard0"
   Driver      "keyboard"
   Option "XkbOptions" "ctrl:nocaps, lv3:lwin_switch"
   Option "XkbRules" "xfree86"
   Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
   Option "LeftAlt" "Meta"
   Option "RightAlt" "LWin"
   Option "XkbLayout" "fi"
   Option "XkbVariant" "nodeadkeys"
EndSection

Use F1-F2 as what? On my machine fn+F1/F2 lowers/raises the brightness of the LCD (with pbbuttonsd), F1 and F2 as such works as... F1 and F2 :?
