Please pardon any Gentoo-newbie mistakes I may make here.

I'm trying my first Gentoo build. I am at this point:
emerge --emptytree system

After running for a bit, I get:

cd c++ && make DESTDIR="" all
make[1]: Entering directory `/var/tmp/portage/ncurses-5.4-r6/work/narrowc/c++'
cd ../obj_s; -I../c++ -I../include -I/var/tmp/portage/ncurses-5.4-r6/work/ncurses-5.4/c++ -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I/var/tmp/portage/ncurses-5.4-r6/work/ncurses-5.4/c++/../include -I. -I../include -D_GNU_SOURCE -DNDEBUG -march=pentium3 -O3 -pipe -fPIC -c /var/tmp/portage/ncurses-5.4-r6/work/ncurses-5.4/c++/cursesf.cc
/bin/sh: line 1: -I../c++: No such file or directory
make[1]: *** [../obj_s/cursesf.o] Error 127
make[1]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/ncurses-5.4-r6/work/narrowc/c++'
make: *** [all] Error 2

It appears that this also killed my SSH session. I'm not sure what I need to post here. I am running a P3-600 SiS-based board. Here is my make.conf:

# These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically built this stage
# Please consult /etc/make.conf.example for a more detailed example
CFLAGS="-march=pentium3 -O3 -pipe"
#CFLAGS="-O2 -mcpu=i686 -fomit-frame-pointer"
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
MAKEOPTS="-j2"
GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.osuosl.org/ ftp://ftp.gtlib.cc.gatech.edu/pub/gentoo http://csociety-ftp.ecn.purdue.edu/pub/gentoo/ ftp://gentoo.chem.wi
sc.edu/gentoo/"
SYNC="rsync://rsync.us.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"
USE="X gtk gtk2 kde alsa usbi xv mp3"

Any suggestions?
