hello, gentoo people.
I have successfully got a Gentoo live CD booted on a JS20 Blade.
Is it possible to setup a gentoo system with kernel 2.4 to run on a js20 blade servers ?
is it documented anywhere ?

Thanks in advance.
M.

At one time the blades did run the 2.4 kernel. So it should be more than possible. I have gentooppc64 on a blade. do you want me to give it a whirl?

One possible hurdle is that the current Gentoo PPC toolchain can't build the 2.4 kernel which is why we no longer support the 2.4 series on PPC. You may need to use an older copy of GCC to build the kernel.

Good luck!

Yes, JoseX; that is in fact true. I tried 2.4.30 and 2.4.28-gentoo and both failed. If one were to be able to build the kernel it should run. The one thing I was worried about is the hvc console but that support is in both kernels.

If you were really serious about making this work, you could build a simple tool chain that would be able to do this.

Thanks for all your feedback.

It is very difficult to discribe how serious I am.
so i understand this is 'possibly possible" ( which sounds not so nice... )
what do i need to read in order to create a gentoo toolchain ( i suspect it is gcc, make, and such... ? maybe some gentoo native tools - for package managing etc. ?)
i am listening...

silly issue with 2.4.30, apply this trivial patch and compile

http://dev.gentoo.org/~omkhar/2.4.30-ppc64-ioctl32.patch

I'll send it up to lkml later today.

Will also try to test on a js20

OK

Word from the ppc64 kernel gods is that 2.4 vanilla is HIGHLY unlikely to work. ameslab BK patches are the best bet. Will try and apply this to vanilla 2.4.30 (if avail) and post results.

BTW - why are we trying this on 2.4?
