Heya guys,

Gentoo has been running stable for ages now, updates are working most of the time, and so do the servers and applications which I need on a daily basis. I am running udev and the latest 2.6.11 kernel. The only two things I haven't looked into yet are

- CD/DVD drive. Is it supported? Can I play/rip music, and how do I watch DVDs using mplayer?
- FireWire and my iPod are always a little flakey. Does mounting work reliably now? If yes, how?

What I am looking for are some good HOW-TOs, or pointers at pages that help me get up and running on that. There were several threads on the iPod issue, but none of them was a real help so far. And as for the CD/DVD drive issue.. I didn't come across anything helpful related to that matter. Perhaps it does just work?

Thanks heaps!
Jens

What ar exactly the problems you are encountering? CD/DVD operations have been rock solid for me for ages, out of the box, so I am not sure I understand the problem.

I personally use xine to play DVDs, but
Code:
mplayer dvd://

should work, though you may need to specify the -dvd-device option if your dvd is something else than /dev/dvd.

As for the iPod, I am afraid I have no idea. Firewire has been pretty solid for me since 2.6.10, but I am using a couple of enclosures only, I don't own an iPod.

Most excellent! I didn't know it was that easy. I emerged, ran it and watched Futurama....

If I plug in the iPod then dmesg gets me this

Code:
ieee1394: Node added: ID:BUS[0-00:1023]  GUID[000a2700026de95e]
ieee1394: Node changed: 0-00:1023 -> 0-01:1023

 /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0: p1 p2

which looks alright to me. Now if I try to mount my iPod (FAT formatted) I get this

Code:
root@tigger ~ # mount -t vfat /dev/sda2 /mnt/ipod/
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda2,
       missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
       dmesg | tail  or so

and /var/log/messages shows

Code:
Apr 16 11:09:43 tigger Unable to load NLS charset cp437
Apr 16 11:09:43 tigger FAT: codepage cp437 not found

Any idea? Apparently, the default codepage setting of mount doesn't work, does it? Where do I go from here?

EDIT: I just checked my NLS seetings in the kernel:

Code:
# CONFIG_NLS_CODEPAGE_437 is not set

guess I have to switch that on...

Try to compile into the kernel the codepages. I would have guessed that they should not be a showstopper but everything else looks just right, so the only logical conclusion for me is that it must be the codepage thing.

Yes, that fixed it... Now I can mount it calling

Code:
root@tigger ~ # mount -t vfat /dev/ipod /mnt/ipod/

and run gtkpod. Excellent, excellent :-)
